Soma Roy Burman

Soma Roy Burman, a 1986-batch Indian Civil Accounts Service (ICAS) officer took charge as the new Controller General of Accounts (CGA) in New Delhi on December 01, 2019. She is the 24th CGA and the seventh woman to serve on this post. She holds M. Phil degree from the university of Delhi in Mathematical Statistics. Prior to be elevated as CGA, she had served as Additional Controller General of Accounts in the CGA office handling the critical areas of Accounting Rules, Policy and Reforms, Financial Reporting, cash and Budget Management.

Gen. Bipin Rawat

Outgoing Army Chief General Bipin Rawat was on December 30, 2019 appointed as the country’s first-ever ‘Chief of Defence Staff’ (CDS) or tri-service chief a day before his retirement as the Army Chief. As CDS, he will be Principal Military Adviser to the Defence Minister and also serve as the Permanent Chairman, Chiefs of Staff Committee.

Tamil Nadu

Tamil Nadu emerged on top of the composite ranking for Good Governance Index (GGI), released by the Central government in December, 2019. Maharashtra and Karnataka secured second and third positions respectively after Tamil Nadu in terms of good governance. The Good Governance Index has been prepared on three groups or categories—big states, north-east and hill states and union territories. Himachal Pradesh was adjudged the best state in the north-east and hill states category followed by Uttarakhand, Among the union territories, Pondicherry was the best governed UT in the Index.

129th Rank

India was ranked on the 129th position among 189 countries on the 2019 Human Development Index, released by the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) on December 09, 2019. India improved its performance and rank on the index by one spot in comparison to its 130th rank in the previous index with increase from 0-643 points to 0-647 points in the current index. Globally, Norway, with a HDI value of 0-954, is at the top of the index followed by Switzerland on the second position. Burundi was at the bottom of it. UNDP’s HDI measures average achievement in three basic dimensions of human development—life expectancy, education and per capita income.

 112th rank

India was ranked on 112th position on the World Economic Forum’s Global Gender Gap Index 2020, released on December 17, 2019. India suffered four places loss in terms of gender gap in comparison to its 108th position in the previous report. India scored 0-668 points to get 112th rank in the current report based on 153 countries worldwide. Iceland continues to be on top of the Report, being the world’s most gender neutral country while Yemen was ranked as the worst country of the world at 153rd spot on the report in terms of gender gap.

Malala Yousafzai

Pakistan’s Nobel laureate and activist Malala Yousafzai was declared as the most famous teenager in the world in the decade by the United Nations in its ‘decade in review report’ released in December 2019. Malala who became the youngest recipient of the Nobel Peace Prize in 2014 was shot by some terrorists in Pakistan’s Swat valley. She fortunately recovered from that deadly terror attack and since then became a global icon of anti-terror mission. She also worked for children’s rights and education and received many other global recognitions.

Greta Thunberg

Greta Thunberg, the teen climate change activist from Sweden was on December 11, 2019 named the Time magazine’s Person of the Year for 2019, becoming the youngest person to get the honour from the prestigious American magazine. Thunberg pipped US speaker Nancy Pelosi, US President Trump, the Hong Kong Protesters to win the honour. However the Hong Kong Protesters won ‘Time’s 2019 Person of the Year accolade in a readers’ poll.

English cricket team’s star all-rounder Ben Stokes was on December 15, 2019 honoured with the coveted BBC Sports Personality of the year award for 2019 in a ceremony in Aberdeen. Princess Royal Denis Law presented the award to Stokes who is the first cricketer since 2005 to get the honour. In 2005 Andrew Flintoff claimed the honour. Stokes played a key role in England’s ICC World Cup Victory in 2019. In a public vote, Stokes pipped six-time formula one champion Lewis Hamilton and world 200-meter champion athlete Diana Asher-Smith to win the honour.

Bougainville

Bougainville may emerge the newest country of the world as voters supporting Bougainville’s freedom and separation from Papua New Guinea on December 11, 2019 won a referendum on it. Chairman of the Bougainville Referendum Commission Bertie Ahern declared that 176, 928 voters backed Bougainville’s freedom as a new nation. These voters are about 98% voters involved in referendum while about 3000 voters backed no independence but more autonomy to Bougainville.

Geneva

The first ever Global Refugee Forum was successfully organised on December 17 and 18, 2019 in Geneva, covering areas such as protection, employment and education for refugees and displaced people. UN Chief Antonio Guterres opened the forum on December 17 and urged rich and developed nations to take more responsibilities in this area. The forum is a key element of the Global Compact on Refugees, which the international community signed in 2018 in New York.

  • China commissioned its first indigenous aircraft carrier named

The Shandong

China on December 17, 2019 commissioned its first entirely home-built aircraft carrier named Shandong in the presence of President Xi Jinping, thousands of Naval Officers and others at naval base near Sanya City. 50,000 ton Shandong is China’s second aircraft carrier. The Liaoning, the first Chinese aircraft carrier was originally purchased as a hulk from Ukraine and entirely refurbished. Like the Liaoning, the Shandong is based on a Soviet design with a ‘ski jump’ style flight deck. It is powered by a conventional oil fuelled steam turbine, power plant.

Ethiopia

Ethiopia launched its first space satellite ‘Ethiopian Remote Sensing Satellite’ (ETRSS-I) on board Chinese rocket Long March 4B from the Tai Yuan Space base in north China on December 20, 2019. The 70 kg satellite was developed by the Chinese Academy of space along with 21 Ethiopian scientists. The successful launch of ETRSS-I makes Ethiopia the eleventh African Country to have a satellite into space. Egypt became the first such country of the continent in 1998. ETRSS-I will send data back of the environment and weather patterns in the Horn of Africa, a very important region for Ethiopia.

Russia

The World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) on December 9, 2019 imposed a ban on Russia from international sport for four years for flouting anti-doping rules of WADA. WADA’s decision means there would be no official Russian team at the 2020 Summer Olympics in Tokyo and other international sports events. Russian athletes can complete in international sports events as individuals, not under Russian flag, only if they follow WADA rules and conditions.

Nepal

 

Nepal successfully hosted the 13th South Asian Games (SAG) from December 01 to 10, 2019 in Kathmandu, Pokhara and Janakpur. It is the third time that Nepal hosted the multi-sport event after its inaugural edition in 1984 and the second time in 1999. ‘Krishnasar’ (the blackbuck antelope) was the mascot of the SAG, 2019. India continued its dominance in the games as its emerged the overall champion for the 13th time in a row by topping the medal tally. This time, India secured its best, ever medal count with total 312 medals including 174 gold and 93 silver to finish on top. Host Nepal finished distant second spot in the event with 206 medals including 51 golds.
