Maharashtra

Maharashtra emerged on top of the first-ever India Justice Report, 2019, released on November 7, 2019 as the best state in justice delivery in the large-medium Indian States Category. After Maharashtra, Kerala and Tamil Nadu secured top positions respectively on the Report in the large-medium states. Among smaller states, Goa leads the group as the best one on justice delivery, The report has been prepared based on publicly available data of different government entities on the four pillars of justice delivery—Police, Judiciary, Prisons and Legal aid.

Indian cricket team captain Virat Kohli was on November 20, 2019 named ‘People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals’ (PETA) India’s Person of the year for 2019 for his animal rights advocacy. He has long been active to improve conditions of animals and for their ethical treatment. He also raised voice for ‘Malti’ an elephant used for rides at Amer Fort, Jaipur. French-Swiss movie Particles, directed by Blaise Harrison was honoured with the Golden Peacock award for best film at the closing ceremony of the 50th International Film Festival of India (IFFI) in Panaji, Goa on November 28, 2019. The award comprises @ 40 lakh, a trophy and a citation. ‘Particles’ director Blaise Harrison and producer Estelle Fialon will equally share the prize money. John Bailey was the chairman of the 50th IFFI International award jury. Russia’ was the country of focus of this Goldén Jubilee edition of the IFFI. Indian megastar Rajinikanth was honoured with the IFFI Icon of the Golden Jubilee honour.

  • ISRO successfully launched Cartosat-3 which is a

Highly advanced earth observation satellite

ISRO on November 27, 2019 successfully launched its Cartosat-3 satellite alongwith 13 other nano satellites of the USA on board PSLV- C47 launching vehicle from the Satish Dhawan Space Centre, Sriharikota. The 1625 kg Cartosat-3 is the first in the third generation Earth observation satellites with a high resolution imaging capability and the ninth in the Cartosat series. It is ISRO’s fifth launch of the year. Cartosat 3 would help large-scale urban planning, rural resource management and infrastructure development, besides providing information for coastal land use and its cover.

Indian oil successfully defended its Beighton Cup Hockey title, 2019 as it prevailed over the Punjab National Bank 2-0 in the summit clash on November 12, 2019 at the SAI Complex in Kolkata. Karajwinder Singh and Gurjinder Singh each scored a goal for the champion team in the final, It was the 123rd edition of the Beighton Cup, one of the oldest hockey tournaments in India.

The first ‘Day-Night’ Test in India was organised at historic Eden Gardens in Kolkata between India and Bangladesh when West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee and Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina inaugurated the Test by ringing the bell on November 22, 2019. BCCI President Sourav Ganguly and many cricketers and others were present in the ceremony. Pink ball was used in this Test. It was India’s first Day-Night Test and first of this kind on Indian soil as well. India won the Test in a dominant style by an innings and 46 runs, Virat Kohli was the captain of Indian side.

He has been at the leading position of Microsoft since 2014, The list is an annual compilation of 20 business leaders who tackled audacious goals, overcame impossible odds, found creative solutions. Fortune magazine list also includes Mastercard CEO Ajay Banga (8th rank) and Arista Networks head Jayshree Ullal (18th spot), the two Indian-origin business leaders.

Anita Indira Anand joined the newly-formed Canadian Cabinet led-by Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, as a minister on November 20, 2019 , becoming the first Hindu woman lawmaker to become a minister in Canada government, Elected to the House of Commons for the first time in Canada polls in October, 2019, Anita became the minister of ‘Public Services and Procurement’ in the 37-member Canadian Cabinet. Born to Indian-origin parents in Kentville, Nova Scotia, Anita had served as a law professor at the University of Toronto. She won the election from Oakville, Ontario.

Oxford Dictionaries declared ‘climate emergency’ as its 2019 word of the year, choosing it from an all- environmental shortlist including ‘climate action’, ‘climate denial’, ‘eco-anxiety’, ‘extinction’ etc. The use of the term ‘climate emergency’ increased by a hundred fold since 2018. The citation of ‘climate emergency’ as the word of the year by Oxford highlights the growing environmental crisis across the globe.

  • New Zealand cleared a law to cut carbon emissions to net zero by the year

2050

New Zealand Parliament on November 7, 2019 approved a legally binding framework to cut carbon emissions to net zero by the year 2050. New Zealand Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern said that the new law was a legal measure to keep global warming below a rise of 1.5 degree Celsius forecast by the UN. It accords different treatment to methane emissions from animals versus other greenhouse gases, bat still targets a cut of 10% in biological methane by, 2030 and upto 47% by 2050.

Thunberg got the honour for her efforts against climate change and for environment protection. Divina got the honour for her fight against the Boko Haram Jihadist group. The Dutch KidsRights organisation has been giving the Inter- national Children’s Peace Prize since 2005.

Noted wildlife biologist K. Ullas Karanth, Director of Centre for Wildlife Studies, Bengaluru was honoured with the George Schaller Lifetime Award in Wildlife Conservation Science for his contribution to the field of conservation. Recipient of Padma Shri (2012), K. Ullas is the first recipient of George Schaller Lifetime honour instituted by the Wildlife Conservation Society (WCS), New York in honour of eminent wildlife scientist George Schaller. K. Ullas had received Sanctuary Asia Lifetime Achievement award and J. Paul Getty honour in 2007 for his wildlife conservation works.

IIT Bombay, the best performing institution from India, secured 34th rank on the list. It is followed by IIT Delhi at 43rd place, the second best Indian institute on the continent's university list. Total 96 Indian universities and institutions featured in the ranking for 2020.

With this season-ending title victory, Stefanos claimed the biggest ATP Singles crown of his career so far. Australia’s Ashleigh Barty trounced defending champion Elina Svitolina of Ukraine 6-4, 6-3 in the final on November 3, 2019 in Shenzhen to lift the season-ending WTA finals Singles title. It was Barty’s fourth title victory in 2019 including the French Open.
